Pepi Play wanted to explore the options to increase their ad revenue, especially from the users who were not converting to IAP and had low engagement with rewarded ads.
Due to the nature of the gameplay there were limited options to realize this goal which led us to the implementation of the interstitial ads as the best option. The main challenge was how to accomplish this in a way that does not hurt retention.
On the product side, we analyzed the user behavior and game flow in collaboration with the Pepi Play team and created an interstitial implementation strategy that was focused on minimizing retention damage while maximizing revenue.
On the mediation side, the GameBiz team revamped the existing ad monetization setup of rewarded video ads, by optimizing the waterfalls, introducing new networks, and creating a setup for interstitial ads.
The combination of mediation and product improvements led to a substantial increase in ad ARPDAU by 74.6% with interstitial ads now contributing 56.7% of overall ad revenue.
Through careful implementation the impact of interstitials on retention and user satisfaction was minimal.
